Sun, roots and settlement
A patio in full Florida sun spends half the year hot enough to matter underfoot, which is why the pale shell matrix earns its place here as much as it does beside a pool. Shaded walkways have the opposite problem: anything that stays damp grows something, and a continuous sealed surface gives algae far less to hold onto than a paver field does.
Walkways near mature trees are the case to flag early. Roots lift pavers one at a time and they lift a slab as a plane; neither is a surfacing problem and both are worth designing around before the pour rather than after.
