Punta Gorda is Charlotte County's waterfront city and it is built on canals — Punta Gorda Isles alone runs somewhere in the order of fifty-five miles of them, which means a very large share of the housing here has water at the end of the garden and a seawall holding it back.
For a poured decorative surface that is the whole context. Pool decks here sit between a house and a canal, in full sun, on slabs of varying age, in a city that has spent the last few years rebuilding.
Where we work
Punta Gorda Isles, Burnt Store Isles and the Burnt Store corridor, the historic district downtown, Charlotte Harbour and across to Port Charlotte.
Rebuilding, and doing it once
Hurricane Ian came ashore near here in 2022 and a great deal of what has happened since is replacement rather than renovation. When a deck is being redone because the last one failed, the questions worth asking are different from the ones people ask about a discretionary upgrade.
The most useful one: is the slab sound, or is it moving? A shell topping can usually go straight over sound concrete, which removes demolition and disposal from the job entirely. It cannot fix a slab that is cracking because what is underneath it has shifted. On canal lots that distinction matters more than it does inland, and it is worth an honest look before anybody prices a surface.
Seawalls and what sits behind them
A pool deck on a canal lot is often within a few feet of a seawall. If the seawall is tired, or if there is a void behind it, the deck is the thing that shows it first — as a settled section or a crack running parallel to the water.
We will say so if we see it. Putting a new surface over a deck that is settling buys you a season and costs you the surface.
Sun, salt and colour
Charlotte County summers are the same argument as everywhere else on this coast, only more so on an unshaded canal lot with water reflecting light back at the deck. How hot a deck gets is governed mostly by how much light it reflects, which means the colour decision does more for comfort than the material decision does.
Salt air handles the rest. On a canal lot, anything metal in or near the deck — drain grates, fixings, rails — should be stainless or a marine-grade finish.
Access
Canal lots frequently mean a long carry: the pool deck is behind the house, the side gate is narrow, and there is a screen enclosure in the way. That is the variable that moves a Punta Gorda quote most, and it is worth mentioning when you call rather than discovering on the day.
