Sarasota pool decks, in a city that measures cool against Siesta sand
Sarasota is the hardest market on this coast to sell a cool deck in, and the reason is four miles offshore. Siesta Key sand is close to pure quartz, which is why it stays cool in August when every other beach in Florida is unwalkable — and it means the people buying a pool deck here already have a reference point for what cool underfoot actually feels like.
So the claim gets tested. A Shellcrete deck is poured light and finished matte for exactly that reason: colour and texture do more for surface temperature than any additive, and a deck sealed to a gloss will read hotter than the same deck left honed. We would rather explain that than sell the seal.
The decks we are usually replacing
Most of what we resurface in Sarasota was poured between about 1965 and 1990 and finished with an acrylic knockdown texture — the generic name is a cool deck, and the trade name people use is the brand that dominated that era.
Those coatings do a genuinely good job for ten to fifteen years and then chalk. The texture holds dirt, the colour goes patchy, and the usual response is to pressure-wash it, which takes off another layer. By the time somebody calls us the coating is usually failing in sheets rather than wearing evenly, and that is the useful diagnostic: even wear can be recoated, sheet failure means the bond is gone and anything else laid on top of it will delaminate too.
What decides whether we can pour over it
Shellcrete goes over a sound existing slab, which is most of why people choose it — no demolition, no dumpster in the driveway, no three-week hole where the deck was. The word carrying the weight in that sentence is sound.
The slab has to be structurally intact and it has to be dry. Hairline cracks are ordinary and get treated; a crack that has moved, one side sitting proud of the other, is a slab problem and an overlay will telegraph it within a season. We check before quoting rather than after, because the honest answer on maybe one job in six is that the slab has to come out first.
The keys, and what salt does that sun does not
On Siesta, Lido and Bird Key the load is different from three miles inland. Salt does not attack the shell aggregate — it is calcium carbonate, it has been in seawater its whole existence — but it attacks everything metal near it. Drain grates, deck anchors, rail fixings and screed edges are where a coastal deck actually fails, and they should be stainless or a marine-grade equivalent specified at the quote rather than substituted on site.
Pool chemistry matters more than weather here too. Saltwater chlorination raises the standing chloride on the deck surface, and a deck that never gets rinsed accumulates it around the coping.
Downtown and the condo question
If the deck is on a terrace over occupied space rather than on grade, the conversation changes entirely and starts with the waterproofing under it, not the finish on top. That is a different trade and we will say so. On grade, in a villa or a townhouse under an association, expect an architectural review for anything visible from a common area, and expect it to take longer than the pour.

Cooler than a dark paver or a sealed concrete deck, yes, and the reason is colour and texture rather than anything exotic. It is not cooler than Siesta Key sand and we will not tell you it is — very little on earth is, which is why that beach is the reference. What we can say is that a light, matte, poured-in-place surface with no dark joint lines is the coolest hard deck you can put around a Sarasota pool, and that finishing it to a gloss undoes most of the benefit.
Can you pour over my existing pool deck, or does it have to come out?
Over it, in most cases, and that is the main reason people choose this over pavers or travertine. The slab has to be structurally sound and dry.
