Driveways, and the thing nobody mentions until it cracks
A driveway is the hardest thing we pour. A pool deck carries people; a driveway carries a vehicle, repeatedly, over the same two tracks, and in this climate it does it on soil that swells and shrinks with the water table.
That means a driveway is a slab question before it is a finish question. Thickness, base preparation, reinforcement and — the one that gets skipped — control joints, cut early and in the right places so the slab cracks where it was told to rather than where it wants to. A poured driveway with a beautiful finish and no joint plan is a driveway with a crack across the middle of it in year two.
The older core, and what is under it
West of the river and through the older neighbourhoods there is a lot of 1950s to 1970s housing on original slabs, often with a driveway that has been patched, resurfaced or extended more than once. Those layers matter. An overlay bonds to what it is poured on, and what it is poured on is sometimes a 1990s coating over a 1970s patch.
Where we find that, we take the coating off rather than pour over it. It adds a day and it is the difference between a surface that lasts and one that fails in patches along the old repair lines.
Riverfront, Palma Sola and Perico
Anything out toward Palma Sola Bay, Perico Island or along the Manatee River is close enough to salt air that the metal in the job is the weak point rather than the concrete. Same rule as the keys: drains, edging, anchors and fixings in stainless or a proper marine grade, specified at the quote.
Ground levels are the other coastal detail. A driveway that drains toward the garage rather than away from it is a problem that only shows up in a real storm, and it is much cheaper to solve with a slope than with a trench drain afterwards.

The three finishes — exposed shell, honed and polished — behave differently underfoot and in the wet, and the sample boards are at the showroom rather than in a brochure.

Exposed shell, honed and polished are the same material finished three ways and they feel completely different in bare feet and completely different again when wet — which is the comparison that actually matters for a pool deck and the one a photograph cannot make for you.
Will a shellcrete driveway crack?
Every concrete driveway cracks. The question is whether it cracks where somebody decided it would. We cut control joints early and place them by span, so the slab relieves itself along a line that reads as part of the pattern instead of across the middle of the entry. What we will not do is pour a driveway thinner than it should be to hit a number — a driveway is a structural slab first and a finish second, and that order is not negotiable.
Do you do the whole front of the house, or just the driveway?
Whole front, usually, and it is normally cheaper per square foot than doing it in two visits. The driveway, the entry, the walk to the door and the side path are one pour and one mobilisation. Where it matters most is where they meet — a driveway in one material meeting a walkway in another at a joint somebody has to detail is where you get the line that never looks right.
