Cool deck repair in Florida: patch it, or resurface the pool deck
Chipped, cracked or peeling cool deck? How to tell damage you can patch from a finish that has let go, and what goes down when the old cool deck has to come off.
Updated October 15, 2026

Cool deck repair is worth doing when the texture is still bonded to the slab and the damage is local: a chipped edge, a scuffed path, a few hairline cracks. Where the cool deck sounds hollow, is lifting, or has been recoated so often that the layers are letting go of each other, patching only moves the failure a few feet, and the old finish has to come off before anything new goes down.
This guide is how to tell which deck you have, from the deck itself, before anybody quotes you. Many Gulf Coast pools built from the sixties through the eighties still wear some version of that pale, knobbly finish. We pour a shell topping, Shellcrete by SRQ Modern, so one of the two answers below is ours. The other is a coating contractor’s job, and on a deck where the texture is holding, it is often the right call.
What is cool deck, exactly?
Cool deck is a thin, light-coloured textured finish over a concrete pool deck. A cement-based or acrylic-modified material is splattered or troweled on wet, then knocked down with a trowel so the peaks flatten into the mottled pattern you can feel underfoot. It is far thinner than the slab under it, and it holds on only through its bond to that concrete.
The name started as one product’s name and has since become generic. On this coast people say cool deck for almost any pale, textured pool deck coating, and this guide uses it the way homeowners do.
It earned the name honestly in one respect: it is pale, and colour decides most of how hot a deck gets, whatever the deck is made of. What it cannot do is hold on through everything a pool deck throws at it. Sun breaks down the surface, pool water and salt sit on it, and moisture rises through the slab from below.
Spray deck vs cool deck: is there a difference?
Not much that matters for a repair. Spray deck is usually an acrylic-modified cement sprayed through a hopper gun in a random splatter pattern, sometimes over a stencil, and knocked down the same way. Cool deck is the same family of finish. Contractors use the two names loosely, and plenty of decks sold as one are really the other.
What they share is the part that decides the repair. Both are thin textured layers bonded to the slab, both fail by losing that bond, and both are patched, or removed, by the same rules.
Which cool deck damage can be repaired?
A patch works when the finish around the damage is still holding. These are the jobs it suits:
- A chipped or worn spot, where the texture around it is intact and rings solid when you tap it.
- Hairline cracks that have not opened, with both sides level.
- Small areas of lost texture, from a dropped planter or a chair dragged across the same spot all summer.
- Fading and staining, which are about colour rather than bond.
The repair itself is simple in principle. Loose material is cut back to a sound edge, the concrete is cleaned, and new texture is applied and knocked down to match the pattern around it.
The hard part is the match. Old cool deck has faded in the sun and picked up the stains of everything that has sat on it, so a fresh patch usually stands out. Many repairs end with a colour coat over the whole deck to tie the patch in, and that coat is a film like any other: it holds only as well as the surface it goes onto.
When cool deck repair is the wrong job
Patching assumes the finish around the damage is holding. These are the signs that it is not:
- It sounds hollow. Tap across the deck with a coin or a screwdriver handle. A drummy patch has let go of the slab, even where it still looks whole.
- It is flaking in sheets, with bare concrete showing where it came away.
- It is blistering. Bubbles that lift in patches usually mean moisture coming up through the slab and pushing the film off from below, and a new layer of the same kind meets the same moisture.
- You can count the layers. Two or three colours stacked at the edge of a chip mean the deck has been patched and recoated before, and the next layer goes onto the weakest of them.
Any one of those across a wide area, and a patch only moves the edge of the failure. The guide to pool deck coating or resurfacing has the rest of the checks, including a tape test you can do with a roll of duct tape.
Is the crack in the cool deck or in the slab?
A crack in cool deck is often a crack in the concrete showing through. If it lines up with a joint in the slab, or runs straight across the deck from edge to edge, it is coming from below. A patch over it will open again in the same place, because the slab under it is still moving.
Hairline cracks with both sides level are normal in concrete. They are filled and prepared as part of the work before any new surface goes down.
A crack with one side higher than the other, or one that has grown from one season to the next, is a different matter. That is the slab moving, and no surface fixes it: a patch follows it, and so does a bonded topping. The guide to a cracked pool deck walks through that test, and when to call an engineer before any contractor.
What happens when the cool deck has to come off
Nothing new should go down over cool deck that is letting go. A patch bonds to the old texture, a colour coat bonds to the patch, and the whole stack holds only as well as its weakest bond. So when the finish is failing, it comes off first, down to sound concrete, and whatever goes on next bonds to the slab itself.
What we pour is a topping an inch and a half to two inches thick: cement, sand and crushed shell, the concrete with the shells in it, mixed on site by our own crews and bonded over your existing deck. It is a new layer of concrete, not another film. The surface is then opened up so the shell shows, and finished for how each part of the deck is used.
Most decks end up honed: ground flat to a soft matte that is comfortable barefoot and still gripped by the shell in it, and flat enough for a table and chairs. Exposed shell leaves more texture underfoot, so it goes on the coping, the steps and the walk out to the lawn, where wet feet need the most grip.
The joints in the old slab are cut through the new surface in the same places. A topping poured straight across a joint will crack along it, so the new surface follows the slab’s lines rather than fighting them.

A topping still needs looking after. It is sealed with a penetrating, matte sealer, never a glossy film, and you reseal it as needed. Rinse it, keep acid off it, and get to leaf stains early.
Will a new surface stay as cool as the old cool deck?
Colour decides most of it, so the same rule applies to the new surface as to the old one: pick the palest colour you can live with. A dark deck in full sun is the one people end up hopping across, whatever it is made of.
We choose the base colour and the shell blend with you from samples. The deck is custom every time, and because the shell is natural, no two decks look quite the same. That is worth seeing on a sample before you decide, not after.
What to do next
Walk the deck with a coin. If the cool deck rings solid and the damage is a few chips and hairlines, a patch and a colour coat from a coating contractor is a fair answer, and we will tell you so.
If it sounds hollow, flakes in sheets, blisters or shows its layers, take photos: the whole deck from a step-ladder, the worst patch with a coin beside it, the edge of a chip showing the layers, and anywhere water sits after rain. Our pool decks page shows what goes down in its place.

Common questions
What is cool deck?
Cool deck is a thin, pale, textured finish applied over a concrete pool deck. A cement-based or acrylic-modified material is splattered or troweled on and knocked down with a trowel, leaving the flattened, mottled texture many older Florida pool decks still wear. The name began as one product’s name and is now used for almost any light textured deck coating. It is a film bonded to the slab, not a new layer of concrete.
How do you repair cool deck?
Only where it is still bonded. Loose texture is cut back to a sound edge, the concrete is cleaned, and new material is applied and knocked down to match the pattern. Matching faded colour is the hard part, so repairs often finish with a colour coat over the whole deck. If the deck sounds hollow, flakes in sheets or blisters, a patch only moves the failure, and the old finish has to come off instead.
What is the difference between spray deck and cool deck?
Very little that matters for a repair. Spray deck is usually an acrylic-modified cement sprayed through a hopper gun in a random splatter pattern and knocked down; cool deck is the same family of thin textured finish, and contractors use the two names loosely. Both are films bonded to the slab, both fail by losing that bond, and both are patched or removed by the same rules.
Why does my cool deck keep cracking in the same place?
Because the crack is usually in the slab, not the finish. A crack that lines up with a joint or runs straight across the deck is the concrete moving underneath, and any patch over it moves with it. Hairline cracks with level sides are normal and are prepared as part of the work. A crack with one side higher, or one that keeps growing, is a slab problem to settle before choosing any surface.
